In the next year, nearly 9 million people will die needlessly. Over half of these deaths will occur due to hunger. The leading cause of hunger in the world is poverty, followed by too much focus on military spending and overuse of natural resources.
Poverty and hunger are widespread throughout the country of Costa Rica. Poverty can affect hunger directly and indirectly. A shortage of resources will prevent families from obtaining a sufficient quantity and quality of food. "Hunger has a negative impact on children's ability to learn in school. Research indicates that low-income children who participate in the School Breakfast Program show an improvement in standardized test scores and a decrease in tardiness and absenteeism compared to low-income students who do not eat breakfast at school" according to the Center on Hunger and Poverty at Brandeis University and the Food Research and Action Center FRAC."

Students who are malnourished are less able to concentrate, have a tendency to under-perform and are less likely to advance with their peers. This contributes to lower high school graduation rates, an increase in unemployment rates and fewer workers qualified for higher paying jobs in technology and management.

unemployment and food insecurity
According to a report released by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (2013), the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent. An estimated 14 percent of the Costa Rican people live on less than $1.25 per day and upwards of 25 percent of the population lives on $5 or less per day.
The biggest cause of hunger in Costa Rica is from food insecurity. Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. For most of the less fortunate people in Costa Rica, finding food is a serious problem. It is very hard to provide for your family when you are busy trying to find out where your next meal is coming from.

daily diet
The Costa Rican diet relies heavily on fruit and vegetables with rice and black beans as a staple for most meals. The cultural food is known for being flavorful and mild. Ordinarily, the less fortunate end up cooking their meals at home. Preparing your own food is a great way to conserve money.
Unfortunately, when you live out in the countryside, you have to grow your own crops because the hike into town to purchase and transport groceries can be a huge burden. Food insecurity mainly affects those who live in the countryside because they can seldom provide all of the food they need.
health conditions
Due to increasing hunger, there are many problems that have arisen. Food shortage leads to malnutrition, which can cause many side affects like weight loss, fatigue, headaches and susceptibility to many other illnesses. A major side effect is a decrease in energy and productivity.
If pregnant women are undernourished, this can be a huge problem. They would be likely to birth a baby of a very low weight. These babies are more likely to have birth defects and learning disabilities. Hunger and malnutrition can be detrimental to the health of your unborn baby.
